Mkomazi National Park

Mkomazi National Park is a protected area located in northeastern Tanzania, near the border with Kenya. It covers an area of approximately 3,245 square kilometers (1,253 square miles) and is situated in the Tanga Region. The park was established in 1951 as a game reserve, and later upgraded to national park status in 2006.

Mkomazi National Park is known for its diverse wildlife and natural beauty. It is home to a variety of animal species, including African elephants, African wild dogs, giraffes, black rhinos, cheetahs, lions, leopards, and numerous bird species. The park’s landscape features a mix of savannah, open grasslands, acacia woodlands, and rocky hills.

One of the significant conservation efforts in Mkomazi National Park has been the reintroduction of the black rhinoceros, a critically endangered species, into the park’s ecosystem. This effort aims to boost the population of this iconic African species and contribute to its survival.

Visitors to Mkomazi National Park can enjoy game drives, bird watching, and experiencing the natural beauty of the area. The park is relatively less visited compared to some other Tanzanian national parks, which can provide a more exclusive and intimate safari experience.
